On the 1st of July 2002, the White Shark Trust welcomed three new Field Research Assistants: Christiane BROUWER (Alberta, Canada), Jamie GALDUN (Herndon, VA, USA) and Rima JABADO (Montreal, Quebec). Followed by Fiona WORTHY on the 15th of July.

From the 22nd of July onwards, Gansbaai (and the Western Cape) was onslaught by a series of storms with gusting gale force winds, and a lot of rain... This bad weather continued through the end of the month unfortunately... unless...
And then on the 31st of July, Christiane's last day (she flew back home to Canada that same evening) the weather cleared up and we managed to go out one last time for that month! We observed three sharks, of which one was really active... we nicknamed her "Speedy Gonzalez", but I think to all of us on the boat, we secretly re-nicknamed her "Christiane"...
